When: Fri., April 18, 8 p.m. and Sat., April 19, 8 p.m. 2014
UNC's Process Series, which showcases works in progress, winds down its current season with The Sacrificial Poets, a celebrated spoken-word performance and outreach troupe. Co-created by Will McInerney, Kane Smego and CJ Suitt, the new piece deals with the challenges its creators have encountered—first as students, then as teachers of youth poetry workshops—in the education system, from the "school-to-prison pipeline" to Eurocentric curricula. Education issues of race, class and gender can be difficult to illuminate in engaging ways, but The Sacrificial Poets' tongues of flame bring them to light with eloquence and immediacy. —Brian Howe
