STRFKR, Octopus Project

When: Tue., Oct. 5, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $10-12

Big bubbly synths are the constant between Portland's STRFKR (until recently, Starfucker) and Austin's Octopus Project. The former lets its electro-disco build like a foam party, churning its slippery arrangements into boom-bap bacchanals, like Ratatat with Goldfrapp's glitter. The Octopus Project offsets murky dance pop with thoughtful accessories like post-rock crescendos and experimental sound trinkets. The Texans' ambitions continue to swell, too. Their forthcoming Hexadecagon claims Reich and Riley as influences and brandishes a complicated stage plot involving eight speakers orbiting the band, synchronized to eight video projections. It seems unlikely they'd pull out the concept for this Tuesday night art pop jam, but maybe you'll get lucky. —Bryan Reed
