Stoll Vaughan

When: Fri., July 23, 8 p.m. 2010

Stoll Vaughan has been compared to Dylan and Springsteen, run the roads with Mellencamp and Fogerty and released four albums that have all ranked on Americana radio's Top 10. If that sounds impressive but sheepishly old school, note that Vaughan's taken a wider view of his roots-oriented sound of late. His latest CD, The Weatherman, employs the help of Carl Restivo, a producer better known for his work with the likes of Wyclef Jean and Kelly Rowland than guitar pickers like Vaughan. The result embeds Vaughan's engaging songwriting in a bed of drum machine loops, banjo licks and that old worn-out rhythm guitar drive that's been his pay dirt. The new EP, The Muse, trades the drum machines for rambunctious horns and piano flair. Stoll plays Broad Street Cafe Friday, and he hosts his own encore at The Open Eye Cafe in Carrboro Saturday night. —Ashley Melzer
