Steve Forbert Trio (Back Room)

When: Sun., July 12, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $20-$22
Steve Forbert was one of many songwriters to emerge in the ’70s with folk-based personal narratives. Though he garnered Dylan comparisons, the Mississippi singer-songwriter was probably closer to Springsteen by putting soulful rock on a troubadour’s frame. With its piano break, his epic second-album love song, “Romeo’s Tune,” bit Billy Joel. But over the years, he’s returned to ambling roots and a little R&B, similar to the path of British pub rock contemporaries Ian Hunter and Graham Parker. He’s an underappreciated lyricist, but his greatest asset remains that dry, lugubrious tenor. —Chris Parker
