Steph Stewart & the Boyfriends CD Release, Bevel Summers

When: Fri., June 21, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $7

"It's been a long time coming," says Durham songwriter Steph Stewart of her first full-length release, Over the World Below. Since releasing a debut five-song EP in 2011, Stewart has grown her sound, reaching beyond the lonely grit of mountain tunes to a more grounded Americana feel. The breadth of that shift is in part thanks to The Boyfriends, her band of three classically trained collaborators. "I think it makes you a better musician when you play with other people, especially the guys I get to play with," Stewart says. "I've learned a lot about space in music and kind of holding back more, so that other people can have moments to shine and bring out different parts of the song." The result is an album stitched with three-part harmonies, mandolin trills, fiddle melodies, banjo drives and the steady heart of a rhythm guitar. Bevel Summers opens. —Ashley Melzer
