Steep Canyon Rangers, Carolina Bluegrass Band

When: Fri., Nov. 11, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: $25-$99
Sure, you could argue that these guys got a leg up in attaining a position of prominence by backing a movie star. But don’t forget that Steve Martin has been playing banjo since before this bunch was born, and he knows a thing or two; the albums they recorded together are nothing to sneeze at. And it was their own album, sans Martin, that finally won Steep Canyon Rangers a Grammy. The modern bluegrassers formed about a decade and a half ago while attending UNC, so you could consider this concert a kind of homecoming gig for them. If one night isn’t enough to get your grassy fix, UNC is hosting a full day of panels and lectures about bluegrass and its many pieces on campus all day Saturday. The Carolina Bluegrass Band opens. —Jim Allen
