Stanley Clarke & Hiromi

When: Sat., Feb. 26, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $26-30

Jazz bassist Stanley Clarke's career stretches back to the early '70s and Chick Corea's trailblazing jazz-fusion group Return to Forever. An incredibly proficient, canny musician, Clarke took advantage of the beachhead Corea created to launch his own solo career, highlighted by 1975's seminal release School Days. His commercial viability pulled him in less inspiring directions during the early '80s, and then he largely retreated into film and televisions scores. Since returning from an eight-year hiatus with 2003's 1, 2, to the Bass, Clarke has been in fine form. He's appearing with vibrant Japanese pianist Hiromi, who collaborated with Clarke on the award-winning film Jazz in the Garden. —Chris Parker
