STAND UNITED!

KINGS, RALEIGH | SUNDAY, AUG. 23

In June, American racism emerged in heinous bursts across the Carolinas. First, there was the shooting at Charleston's historic Emanuel A.M.E. Church that left nine congregants dead. Then there was a spate of suspect church burnings in a string across the South, from Macon, Georgia to Charlotte. Those tragedies, at least, offered a chance for communities of support to rise; in Charleston, a week after the Emanuel shooting, worshippers from across the South remained in the streets in front of the church, passing out water bottles and tear-and-sweat-soaked hugs to any stranger who asked. This incredible benefit, which aids the music program at Emanuel and rebuilding efforts at Charlotte's incinerated Briar Creek Road Baptist, joins those ranks. The Foreign Exchange's Tamisha Waden and The Tender Fruit's Christy Smith—two of the state's best singers—team with emcees Tab-One and Napoleon Wright II. Schooner's Reid Johnson offers some songs, too, as do The Originals. DJ Gonzo and spoken-word favorite Dasan Ahanu offer tunes and thoughts throughout the night. 8 p.m., $10, 14 W. Martin St., Raleigh, 919-833-1091, www.kingsbarcade.com.Grayson Haver Currin
