SPARKcon | Fayetteville Street | Arts | Indy Week
This is a past event.
When: Sept. 17-20, 5:30-11 p.m. 2015
Price: Free

Celebrating its 10th year, SPARKcon floods more than 20 venues and outdoor spaces in downtown Raleigh with artists, performers, exhibits and craft vendors. Produced by Visual Art Exchange, the annual open-source festival for creativity lets artists lead the way, which makes it feel unruly in its organization—its website remains impenetrable—but vibrant in its presence on the streets. Free events are divided among different "sparks" (the idea is to light the fuse on creativity and new collaborations) to help you find what you're looking for. Among other exhibits and spectacles, artSPARK deploys 700 street painters, 500 of them Wake County school students, on Fayetteville Street. CircusSPARK includes a fire show on Friday and Saturday nights. ComedySPARK has a special guest storyteller, Mayor Nancy McFarlane, and a variety of showcases. DanceSPARK features "night Zumba" and a dramatic performance on the façade of the Aloft hotel by visiting troupe Bandaloop (see story, p. 25). The "Wear What You Are" runway show is the highlight of fashionSPARK; filmSPARK showcases local indie cinema; musicSPARK spreads more than 60 acts across 10 venues. For maximum enjoyment, don't even try to untangle the scheduleSPARK; just dive into the merry chaosSPARK in a spirit of discoverySPARK. (Sorry, once you start typing SPARK after everything, it's hard to stopSPARK.) 5:3011 p.m. Thurs.; 311 p.m. Fri.; 11 a.m.11 p.m. Sat.; noon4 p.m. Sun.,
