Re: “Sweepstakes cafes: coming to your low-income neighborhood

How much is a movie? $12? Including popcorn $25?. Why does the independent not protect the poor from this kind of entertainment? what is the difference between spending a few dollars on a movie and spending a few dollars watching a slot machine, or playing a poker game? It is the same escapist entertainment. I lament the fact that the Independent did not protect me from losing 2 hours of my life watching "Weekend at Bernie's 2." The Independent has pages, in fact, sections, dedicated to these Hollywood rip-off artists. Where is the expose on the film industry taking advantage of all the poor souls who spent their money going to see the Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift? Entertainment is a luxury, yet, I have close personal friends who live on well below the poverty line that I frequently see in BARS. DRINKING. Despite what they have been led to believe, they do not become more intelligent, better looking, or hilariously witty, even after 4 or more drinks. This kind of Chicanery must not go unchecked. Please Independent, tell the people. Tell them how to spend their money the way you want them to. They just might listen if it comes from you.

Re: “Sweepstakes cafes: coming to your low-income neighborhood

I think this article imples that low-income African Americans are somehow inherantly vulnerable, and need to be protected from making their own choices. Why does anyone need YOU to protect themselves from themselves? Who protects you from yourself?
