Southern Scribblers with Lee Smith

When: Thu., March 21, 6:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $20

This is not your grandma's book club. In the third installment of Southern Scribblers, a monthly discussion series with Southern authors, host Tim Tyson sits down with Triangle writer Lee Smith to talk about her 2011 book of short stories, Mrs. Darcy and the Blue Eyed Stranger. The collection features 14 stories, with characters ranging from a language-loving 11-year-old boy to a social-climbing bride to an older woman tackling widowhood. Smith also plans to discuss her 1988 novel Fair and Tender Ladies, perhaps her best-known book, which chronicles the adventures of the indomitable mountain woman Ivy Rowe. Expect the night to be more of an informal conversation between writers than anything academic. Ticket sales, as well as a percentage of the sales of Smith's books, benefit Chatham County's Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services. —Emma Miller
