Southern Culture on the Skids, Bat Fangs

When: Sat., Oct. 28, 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $14-$17

Southern Culture on the Skids might not be the first act that comes to mind when you think of big-time North Carolina bands, but the Chapel Hill group certainly earns high marks for longevity and originality. For nearly thirty-five years, the group has powered through with its weirdo, Southern-stained approach to rock music that invites no comparisons (save for Weird Al, who nodded toward the band's biggest hit, "Camel Walk," with his 2014 song "Lame Claim to Fame"). The band issued its fourteenth LP, The Electric Pinecones, last September, and it's rife with wiggly riffs, groovy bass lines, and, of course, a whole track that celebrates flying your freak flag at full height. Southern Culture on the Skids is as good as it's ever been, so it's no surprise that The Electric Pinecones has yet to disappear from Billboard's roots rock chart, even a year later. In the opening slot, Bat Fangs offers extra pre-Halloween bite. —Allison Hussey
