Southern Comfort

When: Wed., May 12, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Director Walter Hill has been behind some of the tightest action films in Hollywood (including directing The Warriors and co-authoring the screenplay to Alien), and this 1981 variation on Deliverance is one of his most underrated works. Featuring a cast of cool character actors (including Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward and Peter Coyote) and a Ry Cooder score, it puts nine National Guardsmen in the swamps of Louisiana, where they make the mistake of stealing some Cajun boats and harassing some hunters. Obviously, some of them aren't going to make it out of the swamps alive. Tense, atmospheric and a bit allegorical, Southern Comfort is a thriller that hasn't received nearly the audience it deserves. Find out what you've been missing when Cinema Overdrive screens a 35mm print for a mere $5, along with a score of classic trailers. The screening starts at 8 p.m. at the Colony; original prints by James Rh33m Davis of Giant Sumo available for purchase at the show. —Zack Smith
