Souls Ajar: An Emily Dickinson Festival

When: Sat., Sept. 15, 3-9 p.m. 2018
Price: $10 suggested

Forget what you just saw at Hopscotch—the real festival bangers this fall are coming from a nineteenth-century poet from Amherst, a deeply private person in a white house-chore dress who radicalized and reinvented the wheelhouse of American poetry (what better lines are there for the age of Instagram than "I'm nobody!/Who are you?/Are you nobody too?"). Hosted by Strobilus Arts at Chapel in the Pines, this mini-festival features linked events including close readings, a nature walk, a lecture by UNC American Studies professor Eliza Richards, and a craft talk by Deborah Coclanis. It culminates in the fellowship hall with a dessert buffet featuring the poet's own recipes. Don't let the cultural fetishization of her reclusive nature distract you from her alchemical effect on contemporary considerations of death, religion, nature, the self, and the written word—basically, much of what it means to be human. One hundred fifty years later, we still gather to talk about it. —Sarah Edwards
