Over 18 years and 11 albums, Philly-based folk act Solas has won the hearts of American and European audiences alike. The Irish-American band relies heavily on traditional Irish musical styles, updating them with a younger, brighter energy. Their last record, 2013’s Shamrock City, found the group also edging into American folk music, with “Lay Your Money Down” boasting a rootsy stomp that faintly recalls old country tunes. Other songs, like “Tell God and the Devil,” are familiar working-class tales of a life spent in the mines, re-spun with sharp banjo and fiddle licks. —Allison Hussey
