Re: “Durham: The making of an image

I live in Durham, rarely watch the local news, and have the same opinion of Durham as it seems most people do. Yes, there are some nice areas and I have lived near areas that are just as bad or worse (in St. Louis), but I feel much less safe here than where I lived last year on the north side of Chicago (which is a very safe area of the city). I take the bus and am usually one of the only white people on there, so the town does seem to be racially divided. I will say that the black and few white people on the bus seem to get along with each other better than in most places I have lived. I also hear stories about local crimes on the bus from people who actually know the people involved or have witnessed them. I also hear semi-automatic weapons going off late at night (and on new years!). The fact is that Durham does have many problems. Most of them based on the fact that African Americans are pushed into the lower class and left with very few resources for self improvement and poor living conditions; buses that continually break down and are inefficient and homes, while cheap, that are run by absentee landlords or slum lords. There are really no affordable quality homes, even ones with less square footage. Although I am paying $5 less for my current apartment than my previous in Chicago, and it is three times as big, we have had a continuous roach problem and an unresponsive landlord; the complete opposite of my last experience. and in looking for a new place, it seems you have to pay an arm and a leg to not have these problems; something that in most places would be considered common decencies.
