Here’s to advances in home-recording technology. Just a decade and a half ago, 18-year-old Sam Higgins, who utilizes a Tascam 388 analog tape recorder and a computer for his music, might have been hard-pressed to record his bedroom-pop musings, let alone release them at a rapid clip. But Staring Thru the Wall, released at the end of August, is a companion EP to January’s vivid Occoneechee Haunts and another striking development for an already impressive songwriter. —Patrick Wall
