The gentleman from Hillsborough is spot on. Jesse Helms was not at all a wishy-washy politian. He voted against the civil rights act of 64, the voting rights act of 65, opposed in a 16-day filibuster, Martin Luther King Day, and voted against AIDS funding from 1983-1990. He certainly stood his ground, if you were not white and conservative, you got nothing from him...
