Drama

Mike Birbiglia's adaptation of his hit solo show is undeniably intelligent and quirky. It's the story of a shlubby nobody who becomes a shlubby somebody, told as an intriguing mix of stand-up comedy, direct-address to the camera, re-enacted nightmares and conventionally staged scenes with actors including Lauren Ambrose, Carol Kane and James Rebhorn. The film's best parts show the secret to success in comedy is often simply showing up. Still, as Matt, Birbiglia's alter ego, rises in the business (suffering from a sometimes-dangerous, sometimes-metaphorical somnambulism along the way), his relationship with long-suffering Abby (Ambrose) is put to the test. It's here that the limitations of Birbiglia's solipsistic script are made apparent.
