Sleep, My Love

When: Fri., Oct. 12, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

Charles Boyer almost drove Ingrid Bergman mad in Gaslight, producing a suspenseful hit in 1944. Sleep, My Love, released just four years later and starring Don Ameche as the husband plotting to push wife Claudette Colbert over the brink, struck darker tones as early Hitchcockian cinematic manners hardened into postwar noir. The film, part of the NCMA's "Women of Film Noir" series, features many notable characters, including the steely-eyed Hazel Brooks as bad-girl Daphne. The opening scene, in which Colbert awakens on a moving train and freaks out, not knowing how she got there, provides interesting self-referential fodder for cineastes. The first thing her blurry vision focuses on is a ceiling light in her compartment, and next the headlight of a train on an adjacent track, which casts a projector-like flicker throughout the corridor she hysterically flees along. Finally, a doctor examines her eye with a penlight as the scene calms and the plots begin. The film begins at 8 p.m. in the East Building auditorium. —Chris Vitiello
