Like Derek Miller, formerly of Poison the Well and now of the pop-bombastic Sleigh Bells, Los Angeles' Sonny Moore converted the urgency and primacy of his mildly metalcore band, From First to Last, into hyper-aggressive electronic music—and became quite successful doing it. As Skrillex, Moore marries the bass of dubstep, the serrated gristle of industrial music and the propulsion of orthodox house music into a contortionist slant of beats, melodies and distended breakdowns. Skrillex focuses more on sound than structure or song, meaning that his music is more suited to visceral experiences than auditory memories. Live, then, his zeal could make up for what he lacks on his mostly dismissible records. —Grayson Currin
