Sketches for Auguste

When: Sat., Feb. 4, 8 p.m. 2017
Price: $15

Henry Miller believed clowns were spiritual figures. The title of his 1948 novella, The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder, captures a moment in the act of a famous clown, Auguste, as he pauses to contemplate climbing a ladder that reaches to the moon: "The great favorite had many tricks up his sleeve, but this one was inimitable. Never before had a buffoon thought to depict the miracle of ascension." Choreographer/performers Murielle Elizéon and Tommy Noonan—the directors of Culture Mill, which presents Sketches—composer/violinists Jennifer Curtis and Pauchi Sasaki, and performer Dohee Lee are at work on a "multidisciplinary chamber opera of sound and movement" based on the novella. For now, they're presenting a formal showing of their work-in-progress for one night only. —Byron Woods
