Sizzla, Dub Addis

When: Wed., Nov. 20, 9 p.m. 2013

Raleigh's Lincoln Theatre doubles down on major reggae imports this week, offering discounts to see respective headliners Capleton and Sizzla if you buy both tickets at once. It's a mini-festival for serious dancehall and roots reggae heads (albeit separated by five days), though both artists have drawn deserved criticism for homophobic lyrics, retractions of those words and then confusing retractions of retractions. Not irie, bros. At any rate, they remain two of the genre's most commercially successful singers and engaging performers.

Releasing as many as a half-dozen albums in a single year, Sizzla is perhaps the most prolific man in modern reggae. He can't quite stick to one style, bouncing between languid grooves and harder fare that borders on rap. The fiery toaster's stage presence contrasts sharply with Capleton's lively but less aggressive approach. Capleton's catalog swings even more wildly, running from romantic roots ballads to crossover-ready rap remixes with the likes of Method Man that earned him a deal with Def Jam. —Spencer Griffith
