SIR RICHARD BISHOP, ROBERT MILLIS

THE PINHOOK, DURHAM WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15

A shared stateside tour seems a surprisingly humble and at-home move for the guitarist Sir Richard Bishop and sound artist Robert Millis. For several decades, they've independently trawled the world in search of exotic and ecstatic sounds, music that broke their conception of the word itself. Bishop long reflected that ambition in the ever-adventurous Sun City Girls, but his enthusiasm for folding the alien into his own work now arrives most often in dexterous, polyglot improvisations and compositions for six-string guitar. He is a frantic and graceful player, able to make overloaded bustles of notes somehow ripple like a lazy river in spring. His new LP, Tangier Sessions, collects seven jams recorded in that city with a mysterious old guitar purchased in Geneva; you can sense the romantic journey. Likewise, Millis has routed his international interests through the extemporaneous Climax Golden Twins and several releases through Sublime Frequencies, a label co-run by Bishop's brother. His solo music is an act of global ambient integration, turning bits of found audio and instruments into long shapes of immersive abstraction. 8 p.m., $10, 117 W. Main St., Durham, 919-667-1100, www.thepinhook.com. —Grayson Haver Currin
