Singin' in the Rain

Singin' in the Rain

When: Fri., July 2 2010

Films about Hollywood are nearly as old as Hollywood itself. But for every dozen or 20 mediocre and outright bad insider pictures, one gem generally emerges. Carolina Theatre's summer repertory film series heads into its second week with this Gene Kelly classic. The film follows as Hollywood actors, along with the industry, go through technological growing pains during the transition from silent movies to newfangled talkies. The film is also well known for its iconic images, including Cyd Charisse's scintillating turn in "Broadway Melody." Notable songs include Donald O'Connor's astounding "Make 'Em Laugh," recently sung by indie heartthrob Joseph Gordon-Levitt during his Saturday Night Live appearance. If you've never seen this film, frequently voted one of the best films ever made, now's the time. —Sarah Ewald
