Re: “Brother Yusuf Salim, 1929-2008

Like many others I had the pleasure and privilage of working along side this humble giant among men. Our's was a friendship that span many years. Brother Yusuf was a great jazz man who on occasion toured with me and my group The Brothership. We played the corporate and wedding circuit. Although he loved jazz and that whole comradare it entails his love for people as well as music found him on our tour bus during the wedding season up and down the east coast playing r and b as well as funk. During our time in the West End in my living room on Carroll street Yusuf and I spent many hours on the piano singing his own compositions during the late 1990's on into the new millinenum. His song lyrics were the most unique thought processing I'd ever heard in music... and the phrasing was another time and a very different place. As he began to teach me the tunes to perform the vocal for a recording session I was honored but told him that he needed to lay down his own vocals. I like his unique childlike phrasing due to his compromised dental profile late in life. He went on to tell me that I was the first person that had ever recognized him as a vocalist. His performance of his songs were special because of his sophistication with regard to communication and romance he nailed the diction with a toothless enterpretation of his very intellectually thought out lyrics. The songs are magic. I will surely incorporate his material in special tributes soon with my regular appearances.
Brother Yusuf Salim (born Joseph Oliver Blair)J.O.B. was a special gift to all who knew him.
