Sidewalk Chalk, Jesse Fischer, Butcher Brown

When: Sun., Oct. 4, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $12-$15
Some bands play a set; others bring a mission to the stage. The eight members of Chicago-based Sidewalk Chalk have tooled soul and hip-hop together for two albums. The muscular new release, Leaves, takes a strong social justice turn. As the music and slam lyrics grow tougher for tracks like “Them, Us,” which unpacks white police violence and black public response, Sidewalk Chalk is pushing itself into a more productive space. Art of Cool 365 brings the group to Motorco, along with Brooklyn-based piano player and composer Jesse Fischer and Richmond’s Butcher Brown. —Chris Vitiello
