Shonen Knife, Pipe

When: Thu., Sept. 25, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $12-$14
It’s not that Shonen Knife, the underground-iconic band of sparkly Japanese pop-rock, has multiple personalities. It’s that they love multiple personalities. Since the early ’80s, Naoko Yamano’s revolving trio has bounced between the scabrous indie rock of early fans like Sonic Youth and Nirvana, Phil Spector-informed sweet-singing and sugary glam metal. These influences have always been pushed together with irreverence and glee, suggesting a band rifling through their record collection in search of a permanent identity. But is the jig up? The new Overdrive flatlines when it reaches for heavy rock, largely sounding like a weak parody of Shonen Knife’s best. —Grayson Haver Currin
