Shiva Ganga

When: Tue., Nov. 8, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $10-39

If the twisting flames of a campfire have ever mesmerized you, dancer-choreographer Shantala Shivalingappa might take you fully to another mental place when she performs Shiva Ganga at UNC-Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall. Born in southern India but raised in Paris until she was 16, Shivalingappa is the rare artist who completely integrates East and West, rather than merely tinting one with the other. Widely known for her lead role in much of Pina Bausch's recent work, Shivalingappa returns to her classical Indian dance training in Kuchipudi in Shiva Ganga. A two-millennia tradition that nonetheless looks modern or even futuristic, Kuchipudi movement can appear uncanny to the Western eye. Dancers almost float as rapid, intricate footwork blurs beneath them. Little jumps punctuate rhythmic phrases. Technique never becomes an end in itself, but serves as a means to an unearthly grace. Shivalingappa's theatrical training—she was a lead in a 2000 Peter Brook production of Hamlet—also comes in handy, as Kuchipudi is based in ritual and character. —Chris Vitiello
