Shirlette & The Dynamite Brothers, Birds & Arrows

When: Sat., Aug. 25, 9:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $7

Coyotes, the forthcoming third LP by Birds and Arrows, shows the band evolving yet again beyond its origin as an intimate, sometimes stark, bedroom-folk portrait of husband-and-wife duo Andrea and Pete Connolly. Their debut, Starmaker, showed pop and sparkle, while its impressive follow-up, We're Gonna Run, found the band bringing in prog elements—shameless nods to Genesis and Pink Floyd—as well as cellist Josh Starmer. Before Coyotes, though, Birds and Arrows never sounded big. With sweeping, auditorium-filling choruses and 11 guest musicians, this trio fills out quite nicely. From the highway-at-night feel of the Wilco-esque "Sunday Night Blues" to the trippy drums and groovy sitar on the opener "Firefly," prog and folk continue to merge with, you know, whatever else happens in the studio. Local badasses Shirlette & the Dynamite Brothers headline the 9:30 p.m. show.Corbie Hill
