Sharyn McCrumb

When: Tue., July 6, 7 p.m. 2010

Wilmington native Sharyn McCrumb has written an army of mystery novels since the early 1980s, winning such top awards as the Edgar and the Agatha. The latest installment in her Ballad series, The Devil Amongst the Lawyers (um, you mean there's only one?), concerns the origins of certain types of Southern stereotyping. In 1935, a young woman is accused of murdering her father; the resulting trial attracts a number of big-city reporters to a small Virginia town, who in turn sensationalize the area and the events for their readers. But a small-town reporter, fresh out of college, is the only one who doesn't see a guilty woman, and as the other reporters deal with memories of their pasts, he seeks to bring to the truth to light. McCrumb will read from and sign copies of The Devil Amongst the Lawyers starting at 7 p.m. McCrumb also appears July 7 at Quail Ridge Books and July 8 at McIntyre's Fine Books. —Zack Smith
