Shark Quest

When: Sat., Nov. 5, 10 p.m. 2011

"Basically the last two times we've played were because somebody brought us out of hiding," says Sara Bell, longtime multi-instrumentalist of Shark Quest. The band, formed in 2002 and beloved for the magnetic alchemy of their compositions, had been on a hiatus that, quite by accident, went on for six years. Last year, the spell was broken for the Minus Sound Research five-year anniversary party; last month, they played for Orange County Social Club's 10th anniversary. This gig at the Cave is as much an excuse to "have another show to play" as anything, Bell says, but she adds that there's no real mystery to coaxing them out of hibernation: "If there's demand, Shark Quest will play." One listen to the elegant builds of the band's folk-infused, bossa nova-steeped, bluegrass-cum-surf-rock sound, and it's no wonder there's a ready audience eager to pounce on that proposition. —Ashley Melzer
