Re: “Legislature to consider future of public TV channels

Thank you, Fiona Morgan and to the Independent, for your continued coverage of this issue. As a former employee of The Peoples Channel, I have seen many of the struggles that the channel has faced with funding. I have also seen, firsthand, how Chad Johnston tirelessly works with local government to keep the station running. Prak and other lobbyists for the telecommunications companies would be wise to take a look at how it works. While TPC may be considered a third party, it is a nonprofit organization and Johnston works with local and state officials to keep the contracts. I hope that your coverage rallies some people to contact their legislators and get more support for PEG channels. The Peoples Channel, and other PEG channels, provide such an important service for the community. TPC not only teaches people how to create their own media and put it on television, but it also works to highlight nonprofit groups and it runs a summer camp so that young people can learn about field and studio production, animation, and narrative production.
