Shady Grove Band

When: Fri., Sept. 9, 6 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

With summer winding down, there aren't many chances left to take advantage of one of Durham's best outdoor entertainment deals: free live music on the wide-open lawn in the middle of the American Tobacco Campus featuring some of the region's finer acoustic-oriented artists. This week, the spotlight is on the Shady Grove Band, one of Chapel Hill's longest-running bluegrass acts, with albums dating back to the 1980s heyday of roots label Flying Fish Records. Guitarist Jerry Brown, mandolinist Charles Pettee, bassist Adael Shinn and banjo/ guitar player John Boulding crank out old-school high lonesome sounds with effortless ease. The music starts at 6 p.m. —Peter Blackstock
