Re: “Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

I am completely baffled at the Indy's assessment of Mike Kelley's performance as our school board member. I will state clearly that Mike is an excellent board member and he certainly has my vote. I have attended school board meetings. When I was unable to attend them, I watched them on television sometimes well past midnight. Mike was always prepared, analytical, asked thoughtful questions of the Superintendent, and did not gloss over topics. He understands that he has an obligation to all students, including the AG students. I believe that all children should be challenged in the classroom - everyday. I believe that Mike supports this. I am a statistic too. I have a child who performs well above grade level, but because of the district's manipulation (watering down) of differientiated instruction and gifted services, my African American male child is inconsistenly educated. Last year, he completely check out - zero growth in reading. As far as I am concerned, my child was left behind. Mike Kelley cares not only about test scores - he also cares about academic growth. Thank goodness for Mike. Sloppy and irresponsible reporting Indy.
