Sex Worker, Psychic Reality, Sagan Youth Boys, DJ Nasty Boots

When: Fri., Nov. 26, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $6

If you've heard of either of Daniel Martin-McCormick's better-known bands—the late and great Black Eyes or the inclusive art-punk trio Mi Ami—you already know that his music often takes the role of the aggressor. Whether he's yelping and moaning clipped phrases in falsetto, or whether Mi Ami is blasting through a noise-dub blitz, Martin-McCormick's music leads with barbs, even at its most melodic. Sex Worker, his new project for solo voice, systematically approaches sound the same way—hooks hidden beneath rays of static and razors of tone. But Sex Worker trades Mi Ami's brazen precision for storm clouds of sound, so that "Tough Love," a would-be pop song of deep bass and gentle singing, eventually becomes a shouting match for Martin-McCormick and his electronics. Think Cold Cave with more anger than darkness, or New Order, in ruins. This FrequeNC Records show also includes Psychic Reality, Sagan Youth Boys and DJ Nasty Boots. —Grayson Currin
