Seven Samurai

When: Fri., Sept. 17, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $3.50-$5

With a great retrospective of Akira Kurosawa's films at the Carolina Theatre only a few months ago and plenty of screenings on TCM and at college campuses, all in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth, is one more screening of Seven Samurai too much? The correct answer is "No, of course not. What kind of stupid question is that? There's no such thing as too much Kurosawa!" This 1954 classic about a group of ronin (masterless samurai) hired by farmers to defend their village from bandits set the standard for action films for decades to come. This is the movie that established the idea of getting a crew together to take on the big enemy, and not for nothing has it consistently ranked on top 10 lists of the greatest movies ever made. But why don't you see for yourself? This screening of the definitive version of the film starts at 8 p.m. in the museum's East Building auditorium. It also kicks off this year's NCMA Fall Film Series—curated by Indy contributor Laura Boyes—the first half of which is a Kurosawa retrospective. Admission is $5, or $3.50 for students and members of the museum, Cinema Inc. and the Galaxy Cinema.—Zack Smith
