"I did not know that I had been taught nothing about the world," says activist Mukhtar Mai, recalling her childhood in Pakistan. Then she corrects herself. "I was taught something—all girls were; I was taught silence, I was taught fear. ... But time caught me, it gave me a lesson." In Seven: A Documentary Play, playwrights interviewed her and six other activists, from Russia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Northern Ireland, about their efforts to elevate the condition of women in their parts of the world. Sean Wellington directs this first outing from Sotto Voce Theatre in Durham and Raleigh this week. The staged reading's cast includes Hazel Edmond, Ra'chel Fowler, and Julya Mirro. —Byron Woods
