SEMINAR

PLAYMAKERS REPERTORY COMPANY, CHAPEL HILL

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 14–SUNDAY, NOV. 1

Seminar, the 2011 Broadway hit, comes to PlayMakers Rep with an aptly cast lead role. In Theresa Rebeck's lively comedy, four young writing students fork over serious moolah for a seminar with Leonard, a brilliantly cantankerous fiction-writing sage in the manner of Gordon Lish. Anyone who has attended a creative writing workshop should recognize the ensuing lacerating badinage, the bruising snap critiques, the entanglements of ego and sex and other feints and parries of the life of the mind. At PlayMakers, Leonard is played by longtime company member Ray Dooley (he was a memorable Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream last year), who, as the head of the Professional Actor Training Program at UNC-Chapel Hill, has real-life experience of the slippery, charged mentor-student relationship to draw on. The production is helmed by Michael Dove, director of Forum Theatre in Washington, D.C., whom PlayMakers hosts in a preview conversation at Paul Green Theatre on Oct. 7. 7:30 p.m. Tues.–Fri., Sun. Oct. 25 and Sat. Oct. 31; 2 p.m. Sun. and Sat. Oct. 31 (no shows Oct. 17 and 26), $15–$54, 150 Country Club Road, Chapel Hill, 919-962-7529, www.playmakersrep.org. —Brian Howe
