Drama

Director Ava DuVernay's unadorned, didactic presentation camouflages a remarkably layered narrative that explores complexities in the 1960s fight for civil rights inside and outside the movement. Focusing on the marches in Selma, Alabama in 1965, part of the brilliance of this snapshot of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is that it extols him as a historical figure and agent for social change but declines to cast him as a plaster saint. The film bears witness to the power of protest and affirms the truly subversive nature of civil disobedience. It succeeds as moving historical drama about a movement and is a timely paean to nonviolent resistance.
