Self Defense Family, Makthaverskan, Creative Adult

When: Thu., March 12, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$12
Loosely translated from the band’s native Swedish, Makthaverskan means “powerful woman.” The Gothenburg quintet has that in singer Maja Milner. Milner’s voice seems stuck in a perpetual state of frustrated yearning, offered over icy, propulsive post-punk. Her singing gives Makthaverskan a harrowing emotional edge. That headliners and tourmates Self Defense Family, a New York post-punk band, just released a collaborative split with Touche Amore speaks to the band’s righteous pummel; that it performed a pared-down version of Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio at a recent tour stop in Los Angeles says as much about its intelligence, ambition and attitude. —Patrick Wall
