Seeing the World, One Drawing at a Time: Urban Sketchers

When: Aug. 16-Oct. 6 2012

No, this isn't about sneakers. Urban Sketchers is an international affiliation of itinerant artists who never leave home without a sketchbook and a box of pencils. Gabriel Campanario, a Spanish journalist and illustrator living in the United States, founded the group on Flickr in 2007. Compulsive sketchers located each other there, and their drawings of global city scenes—from Daumier-like faces glimpsed on street corners and cafés to spectacularly detailed architectural renderings—accumulated into an impressive archive. Sketches are done in situ rather than from photographs, giving the work the vitality of street photography. The Ackland Museum Store's agile exhibition space hosts the first Urban Sketchers international show, with works by 38 correspondents from 19 countries on exhibit and for sale. Thursday's opening runs 6:30–8:30 p.m.; the show continues through Oct. 6. —Chris Vitiello
