American Indian Heritage Month
Did you know that almost half of U.S. states got their names from Indian words? Though North Carolina is not one of these, the state will join numerous others in a monthlong celebration of American Indian Heritage Month. Upcoming November programs at the North Carolina Museum of History include American Indian storytime, Saturday, Nov. 2, 10-10:30 a.m.; Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), Saturday from 1-3:30 p.m. and Writer's Block: Moon Dash Warrior, with Lumbee author Delano Cummings, Sunday, Nov. 3, 3-4 p.m. The Orange County Historical Museum also offers programming on Saturday, Nov. 2, 1-5 p.m., with a Native American Symposium, Sign of the Snake, which will focus on local Native American traditions preceding and following the arrival of European settlers ($5). Also on Saturday, Living History Day at Occaneechi Indian Village in Hillsborough, will feature cooking, dancing and demonstrations of daily life activities. N.C. Museum of History, 5 East Edenton St., Raleigh. (919) 715-0200 for information and additional programs. The Orange County Historical Museum, 201 North Churton St., Hillsborough. Ernest Dollar, (919) 732-2201 for details.

Heather Headley
Though Tony Award-winning actress Heather Headley may best be known for her standing-ovation-worthy performances in Disney's Broadway hits The Lion King and AIDA, she may soon be adding "award-winning R&B artist" to her bio, with debut solo album This is Who I Am. On Friday, Nov. 1, Club G's Comedy Room will provide a musical preview of this vocal powerhouse, when Headley visits the capital city for a one-night performance. "I want this to be an album people can listen to now and 10 years from now," says Headley of her freshman compilation, "something that can exhilarate people and help them through these uncertain times." In these uncertain times, one thing is for certain: You don't wanna miss this show. 10 p.m. (doors open at 8 p.m.). 108 1/2 East Hargett St., Raleigh. $6. (919) 821-4901.
