Sealion, Petey, The Mineral Girls

When: Sun., Aug. 2, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $8
The surf’s-up punk of Dallas’ Sealion draws from expected places: Link Wray’s rumbling fuzz, The Ventures’ splashing reverb, The Trashmen’s crashing tumult. The new Heavy Fizz bears all the hallmarks of the contemporary garage rock revival, but closer listens unspool the influence of gloomy British post-punk (“Wet Jeans” is New Order via Dick Dale) and Pavement’s fuck-off insouciance. Charlotte’s Mineral Girls, meanwhile, graft a punk-rock pulse to lo-fi indie rock. There’s more than a passing resemblance to the earliest Sebadoh records. —Patrick Wall
