Screaming Females, Tenement, Waxahatchee

When: Wed., Sept. 18, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
While they've operated in a fiercely DIY manner, keeping their basement-party energy long after landing gigs on actual stages, the sound of New Jersey's Screaming Females has never bowed to punk simplicity. Between Marissa Paternoster's howling vocal and expressive guitar solos and the agile rhythm section of bassist Mike Rickenbacker and drummer Jarrett Dougherty, the trio has formed its own aggressive take on classic guitar rock, suggesting shades of early Dinosaur Jr or late Sleater-Kinney. Ultimately, that balance makes them ideal headliners for this bill, which also features the addled pop-punk of Wisconsin's Tenement and the fuzz-shuttled confessionals of Waxahatchee. —Bryan C. Reed
