Scout Niblett, Holy Sons, Michael Holland with Peas & Collards, Bad Mr. Viswas & the Family

When: Sat., Oct. 9, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $7

It's not hard to understand the PJ Harvey comparisons Scout Niblett gets—both are iconoclastic British songwriters channeling brash, primal anxiousness. However, Niblett's pained passion seems more unmediated, often with but a thin scrap of guitar to disguise her nakedness. Her voice isn't pretty and the songs aren't hooky, yet her stark paeans announce themselves with such drama that it's difficult to look away. Producer Steve Albini's minimalist style suits Niblett's bare-wire emotionality on her latest, The Calcination of Scout Niblett, stretching her tense sound taut and amplifying its menace until it reaches a darkness unmatched in her catalog. Openers are Holy Sons, Michael Holland with Peas and Collards, and Bad Mr. Viswas and the Family. —Chris Parker
