Scott Tixier

When: Fri., Feb. 10, 7 & 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $28-$30
French violinist Scott Tixier is the latest in the long, sparse tradition of jazz violinists, the heir of Stéphane Grappeli and Jean Luc Ponty. The violin opens different avenues for soloing than more traditional horns; its strings offer different restrictions and opportunities. Tixier’s sound is lithe and propulsive, skittering inventively around both the tunes and his fingerboard. His recent album, which these shows are celebrating, mixes originals with tunes by Django Reinhardt and Erroll Garner. —Dan Ruccia
