Scott Huler

When: Wed., May 12, 7 p.m. 2010

Raleigh author Scott Huler, who did last year's excellent No Man's Lands: One Man's Odyssey Through "The Odyssey" uses Raleigh as the starting point for his new book, On the Grid: A Plot of Land, An Average Neighborhood, and the Systems that Make Our World Work. Inspired by the drought in the area, Huler begins an examination of the infrastructures most people take for granted—for example, the sewer system, phone towers and roadways. Huler works backward, combining personal experiences, tales from workers, historical facts and even the origin of a drop of water coming out of his faucet. The result is a story that will change the way you see the world around you and definitely change the way you see Raleigh. Huler will read from and sign copies of On the Grid. —Zack Smith
