SCOPE: The Southern Landscape

When: June 5-25 2015
Price: free

VISUAL ART EXCHANGE—Maybe artists' job is just to keep a vigil on the margins, noticing what others miss. That's the tacit premise of Scope: The Southern Landscape, a new show featuring dozens of artists from Southern cities, coastal towns and backwoods. Their varied mediums add up to an intimate, many-faceted native survey of landscapes where the rustic and the modern are juxtaposed. Juried by Nasher Museum of Art curator Marshall Price, the show is healthily populated with the requisite photos of overgrown barns, weathered white churches and shacks in stark fields. You'll see the old tobacco sign and the remains of the green wall in downtown Durham. But you'll also spot more sideways glimpses, including Lambert McLaurin's surprisingly lovely still life with azaleas and old tires and Ann Marie Kennedy's ephemeral drawings of regional flora. With so many artists involved, the show cultivates the diversity of views that is mandatory for any true picture of the American South. After this opening reception, the landscape stretches out through most of June. 6–10 p.m., free, 309 W. Martin St., Raleigh, 919-828-7834, —Brian Howe
