School of Seven Bells, Active Child

When: Tue., Oct. 19, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $10-12

Brooklyn's School of Seven Bells looked at first like a supergroup, uniting Benjamin Curtis of Secret Machines with the Deheza twins of On!Air!Library! and two members of the band Bear in Heaven. But after a fascinating, rhythmically and structurally ambitious debut EP in 2007, the band trimmed to a trio and traded many of its most challenging compositional components for more straightforward hook delivery. On the new Disconnect From Desire, they've pulled too close back to the center, with only modest keyboard textures and industrial-light beats left to decorate the band's middling verse. Opener Active Child deserves your time, though: Former choirboy and hip-hop obsessive Pat Grossi sounds his love songs like Bon Iver in a disco, stutter beats rattling beneath harp and falsetto melodies fair enough for cathedrals. SVIIB have yet to make good on their potential; every new track from Active Child stockpiles it. Pay $10 in advance or $12 at 9:30 p.m. —Grayson Currin
